Reviews from Surface Unsigned (Birmingham) 2008
Kicking off the last evening of the first round of Surface Unsigned 2008 was Durham based four-piece Twister. Their sound is upbeat, melodic Indie-Pop-Rock that incorporates elements of Garage-Rock and Blues to create an exciting noise that’s distinctive and original enough to sound relevant, yet instantly likeable and wholly accessible. It’s a tricky balance to get right, yet the band manage it well thanks to a real skill for writing witty, memorable Indie-Pop tracks and the intensity that they put in onstage coming across loud and clear in their music.
The third band of the afternoon was Durham based four-piece Twister. A sound that mixes contemporary Indie-Pop, Alt-Rock and Classic Rock n Roll, they’ve found a direction that really works for them and within which they have written some strong hook-ridden material with a solid range. Seemingly most comfortable, and undoubtedly at their strongest in their rockier moments – they’ve got some excellent anthems-in-the-makings complete with catchy heavy riffs, punchy beats, excellent use of layer/call-response vocals and sing-along choruses.
